Wedding cakes in Sussex - What to expect when ordering your wedding cake from Calley’s Cakes.
Last year Calley’s Cakes made 40 wedding Cakes for lovely couples in and around Sussex. 2018 is set to be even more!!
For a lot of people this can be the first time they have ordered a bespoke cake so I thought I would share a little of what to expect from Calley’s Cakes and a few little known secrets too!
1. Book your wedding cake early!
Calley’s Cakes make up to 3 wedding cakes a week or up to 6/8 celebration cakes. From April-October is our busiest wedding season. Some dates can be fully booked 2-3 years in advance! Get in contact as soon as you know your date. Occasionally there are times when I can squeeze in a last minute wedding cake so send a message/call/Email and check your date is free.
2. Meet us at wedding fair
Calley’s Cakes attend 6-8 wedding fairs a year across Sussex. Keep an eye on our facebook page and website for details of these. They are a fun day out and I give out free cake and discount vouchers! Usually these run January-March and September-November.
So if you are looking for a bargain and want to see my cakes close up its always worth meeting me at one of my fairs. The only downside to waiting is that a lot of people save their dates and book on the day so it’s always worth contacting me about your date before the fair and letting me know you will meet me there and I can save your wedding date for you.
3. How to contact and what information to give?
The best form of contact for me is email or message via my website/social media. This gives me written information about what we discuss and avoids any confusion later on I can speak to 20+ clients a day so I always try and follow up with an email to confirm what was said.
The information I need is wedding date, venue, estimated guest numbers, and if you have chosen a theme/colour scheme for your wedding. If you have been browsing Pinterest or google and have found some photos of cakes you love send them to me as it’s great to get a feel for the type of look you want for your big day.
4. Tasters and consultation’s How do they work?
I always recommend booking in for your taster and consultation as it gives us a chance to meet fave to face. I am happy to travel to you or host in my home by appointment only.
The consultation lasts around an hour and we try to finalise any details and it gives you a chance to ask any questions.
Typically we discuss size, flavour for each tier, decoration choice, times for delivery and set up of your cake and whether you would like to hire a Cake stand. Deposit’s can be paid before or at the consultation.
Your tasters come in 3 4” sized cakes (or cupcakes if that’s your choice) you can chose your flavours and there is plenty to share with friends or family after the consultation.
Typically I meet just with the bride and groom however if you want your maid of honour, best man or family member there too that is fine however it is better to have just a small group to get your needs across.
Top tip: I have a lot of contacts in the wedding industry and I’ve seen their work in various venues and wedding fairs so if your looking for a seamstress, florist, photographer, venue dresser etc... I can usually provide you with their details and I only give out information for those I’ve met and personally would use.
5. Changing your mind is ok!
So we have met, you’ve booked your cake and design and suddenly whilst browsing wedding pages you see a Cake design that you just fall in love with... or you recieve your RSVP’s back and more/less people are attending than expected. Don’t panic I accept changes up to 6 weeks before the wedding day just let me know and I can change the information on your order.
6. Set up and delivery.
Set up of your cake and delivery to the venue is all included in your price. On the big day I will arrive at your venue and assemble your cake. I usually travel with your Cake separated to avoid any damage in transit. Leave any toppers/Cake stands or anything you want added to the cake on the cake table, if it’s not ready I will usually find a member of staff who will help. If your having your florist providing fresh flowers for the cake please give me any contact details before the day incase either of us runs late.
You can chose to come and see the cake, I’m happy to send you a photo when it’s set up of your busy getting ready or you can wait to walk in and see it with your guests.
So what are you paying for?
Firstly the cake... all of my cakes around 5” tall per tier compared to the usually supermarket size of 2-4” you get 3 layers of sponge plus two layers of filling and an outer coating of ganache, buttercream and/or fondant. Each cake is handmade from scratch using tried and tested recipes, baked, cooled, trimmed, filled and covered by hand. I adore sharpe edges and each tier can take up to an hour to smooth and get perfect for you.
Each tier has its own cake board and the tiers below are dowelled to ensure your Cake stands straight and tall and doesn’t sink.
All of my edible decoration is handmade from sugar flowers to bride and groom toppers. Did you know a single rose takes around 30 minutes to make and Cake lace takes 24 hours per piece to dry and be ready to add to your cake.
Set up and delivery as well as the consultation and tasters are all included in your price as well as design time etc...
You also get the piece of mind when ordering from Calley’s Cakes. I have a 5* hygiene rated kitchen from environmental health which you can see on their website, I am fully insured both on my product and public liability as well as insurance for delivering your cake.
As an added bonus I am part of a handpicked local cake makers group who are a bunch of incredible talented ladies who in the event I was unable to make your cake would step in to ensure your cake was perfect for your day.
I take a 50% non-refundable deposit to confirm your booking and the final payment is due two weeks before the wedding day. I am happy to take installments and can be flexible just let me know what works for you and I can try and accommodate you.
Pricing is based on ingredients plus materials plus time so each cake is priced individually according to size/design I use the same formula for all of my cakes be it a birthday cake or wedding cake. Wedding cakes are usually more expensive due to the size usually being bigger cost of tasters plus extra time for delivery/set up/consultation etc...
Top tip: If you have set a budget for your cake let me know and I can try and accommodate your taste with your budget. There are many things I can suggest that will bring your price down from reducing a full cascade of sugar flowers to some elegantly placed small sprays on each tier, to reducing the size of your cake.
I am always happy to answer any questions you have even if you just need a little reassurance leading up to the big day or want to just check in with me every few months leading up to the wedding.
9. After your day.
So you’ve had an amazing day and loved your cake. I adore recieving photos so if your photographer had captured the cutting of the cake please send them to me it really makes my day.
Return your cake stand as soon as possible please I only have a limited number and they can take a week to order new ones so prompt return is always appreciated.
Reviews can be placed via google, facebook, easy weddings, bridebook etc... so if you would like to leave me a review or several they are always welcomed.
